David Jones grew up in eastern North Carolina where he spent
his most fond childhood memories crawling around in the depressions
left by dogs under the front porch shrubs. He would occasionally
become fascinated with artifacts that would work themselves
out of the soil during heavy rains. But it was the smell and
the feel of the dirt that most attracted him to this spot.
He never had a chance in terms of vocation.
He received a B.A. degree from the University of North Carolina
at Wilmington in anthropology. He then went to the University
of Tennessee where he earned an M.A. in Biological Anthropology.
His thesis, dealing with bone integrity and diet in Native
American populations led him into archaeology, where he has
been for 25 years.
He spent 15 years doing contract archaeology in the southeastern
U.S. He has been in his position of State Parks Archaeologist
for 10 years.
While it now strains the joints and muscles a little bit,
he always finds time to crawl back under the shrubs and just
sit for a spell when he visits his parents at the old family
home.
